A Quick Note On Swearing!

Hi y'all! I wanted to share my thoughts on the frequent request to allow swearing in the subreddit. It's a very popular topic, I know. If it were up to me, I'd definitely tone down the filter—and perhaps that’s something I'll look into—but here’s the situation we're in:

Many people argue that Reddit is 13+ and that children shouldn't be in the subreddit in the first place. While there is some truth to that, the fact is that kids are going to stumble into this space no matter what. Not only should they not be exposed to the sheer amount of swearing that would occur if the filter were lifted, but they also shouldn't be allowed to use that kind of language here either.

I'm sure many of you know what happens when children get access to the internet unsupervised—swearing, and a lot of it. I think if you saw the removal logs of the auto mod, your opinion on allowing swears would quickly shift. The sheer number of removals is astonishing, I swear, and most of them are not just "little" swears either... Of course, you may say, "That’s not our problem," but ultimately, it would be the mods who have to go through and find the particularly heinous ones to remove.

What we have to understand is that, whether we like it or not, all of us here are engaging in what many people would consider a "kids' game." While MSM can, of course, be enjoyed by people of all ages, the game's goofy and fun art style naturally attracts a younger audience. Ultimately, we are a subreddit for a mobile game—one that, in almost no scenario, requires swearing.

TL;DR: While Reddit is 13+, kids will inevitably end up in the subreddit. Removing the filter would lead to an overwhelming amount of swearing, much of it excessive, making moderation harder and exposing kids to inappropriate language. Given that MSM is a game with a naturally younger audience, swearing simply isn't necessary here.

Please let me know your thoughts, all of this isn't set in stone!! I’m at the bottom of the mod list here, so it's not up to me alone to make huge decisions about changing the filter, but I'll check in with the other mods to see what their thoughts are :)

On the topic of moderation, I’d love to bring in more people who love MSM as much as I do. I’ll be looking into opening mod applications again soon—keep an eye out!!
